Oral Cancer Screening

According to the Canadian Dental Association, oral cancer is the 13th most common cancer diagnosed each year in Canada. Just like any other type of cancer, oral cancer can be life threatening. Oral cancer can occur anywhere in the mouth including on the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth, sinuses and throat. The primary reason for high mortality rate due to oral cancer is because of late detection. Oral cancers are usually more aggressive than other types of cancers and by the time it is detected, it is usually too late.

Symptoms of Oral Cancer:
Dentists are well equipped to recognize early signs of cancer. If you go in for regular check-ups, there is a higher chance that it can be detected early enough so that it does not progress. Some symptoms are:
  • Red or white spots or sores anywhere in the oral cavity
  • A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal
  • A lump, thickening, or rough spot somewhere in the mouth
  • Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
Some of the risk factors apart from age for getting oral cancer include:
  • Alcohol consumption of at least 1 drink per day
  • Use of Tobacco
  • Immune deficiencies such as HIV & AIDS
  • Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
